Enchanting, magical, intriguing – the most photographed group of mountains in
all the majestic Dolomiti Alps is undoubtedly the Three
Peaks of Lavaredo.
The towering crags that stand in territory of
the municipality of Dobbiaco and others in the nearby province
of Belluno are parts of the Dolomiti di Sesto
chain, routinely ranked among the most famous on earth. Thousands of visitors
flock to the “Dolomiti di Sesto” Natural Park to experience
their extraordinary beauty firsthand.
With its impressive height of
2,999 meters, Cima Grande/Central Peak scaled for the first
time by Emilio Comici and two companions is still one of the
most daunting and exciting challenges for mountain climbers today. With its
2,973 m height, Cima Ovest/West Peak and Cima Piccola/Small Peak, standing at
2,857 m above sea level are both big attractions themselves, the latter also
known for its “Spigolo Giallo/Yellow Edge”, one of the most difficult climbs in
the Dolomiti Alps for years.
The realm of the Tre Cime is just as popular
with hikers and less skilled mountaineers. There are numerous fixed-aid ascent
routes (with steel cables and ladders) and spectacular walking trails of
various degrees of difficulty to the delight of expert and beginner
mountain lovers alike.
Drink in the fresh scent of the alpine flowers in
the pastures or linger for a refreshing pause at a cold, clear mountain lake
before reaching your destination: any of the area’s picturesque mountain
huts – and then sample some of the local specialties of food and drink
on hand. Take a vacation you can be proud of – marvellous relaxation and
discovery in the Land of the Three Peaks.
